ABOUT
ZAGREB FIRE DEPARTMENT
Zagreb got its first
fire department as far back as the second half of
the 19th century. At the time local carpenters,
blacksmiths, constructors and others began joining
to the first Volunteer Fire Department. There were
about 100 voluntary firefighters then, and the Department,
founded in 1869, had been fulfilling the responsible
service of fire protection in Zagreb for 40 years.

Even since 121 years ago, there were special control
stations- so called fire-report stations, placed
at the important places around the city. From these
places it was possible to raise the fire-alarm at
the fire station at any time of day or night.
At that time the area of Zagreb was divided into
5 inner and 5 outer districts. That kind of partition
on fire districts enabled indicating the position
of fire with special optic signalization from the
Lotrscak Tower at Upper Town.

When Zagreb Volunteer
Fire Department moved to new Fire station on Savska street on September the 20th 1909, the possibility
of founding the Professional Fire watch came under
serious consideration. Formal founding of Professional
Fire watch was carried out on October 1st, 1910.
with short ceremony. Two sections were formed. Each
fireman was on duty for whole seven days and nights,
and on the eighth day he was finally relieved of
duty and free to rest (one day).
Today, Zagreb has five fire stations located all
over the town:
• Fire Station 1- CENTAR
• Fire Station 2- ZITNJAK
• Fire Station 3- JANKOMIR
• Fire Station 4- NOVI ZAGREB
• Fire Station 5- DUBRAVA
Zagreb fire brigade has 358 employees all together.
332 of them are operational firefighters, with average
age of 30.
There are 56 vehicles
in the service, approximately 12 years old on average.
In 2004, we had about 3000 interventions, of which
some 55 % were fires and the rest were of technical
variety (car-crashes, stuck elevators, etc.).
