International firefighting weblog (online magazine)

International online firefighting magazine http://www.fire-blog.net/ in weblog format is written by firefighters for firefighters This introduction includes an invitation to participate as an author.
Writing for this weblog is very easy. Ideally, authors would contribute an article every now and then. For example, a monthly roundup of national firefighting news would be a great start.
Internet is really interesting-this international web page is managed by one firefighter from Germany one from USA and one from Croatia.
There is plenty to write about; techniques, tactics, training, technology, etc. It is entirely up to you how much and about what you want to write.
International cooperation, sharing experience and networking in firefighting is really important so I hope to hear from you again on http://www.fire-blog.net/

FIRE COMBAT competition in Opatija

FIRE COMBAT is a firefighter competition held in Croatia and Slovenia for some years. Goal of the competition is that a firefighters wearing a full protection close, with SCBA, pass a course with variety of obstacles:

  • Tunnel,

  • The wall,

  • Tower (climbing and lifting a hose then descending from tower)

  • carrying a person

  • pulling a B hose filled with water on 4 bar.

On 05. may members of Zagreb fire department participated in this event for first time. Three teams from Zagreb participated in competition-one team came on fourth place, one on fifth and one team was disqualified. The best result was achieved by firefighters from neighboring Slovenia. Since we are building our own course with obstacles in one of our fire stations we are hoping that the results will be better next time.

ROPE RESCUE SEMINAR IN ISTRA, CROATIA

Seminar was held on 29 and 30 march on Brijuni island and it was organized by firefighters from southern Croatian peninsula-Istria. Instructors on this seminar were experienced firefighters which have been on 40 days rope rescue training in Rome, Italy. Some of the instructors are long time cavers and Mounting rescuers with many years of experience in vertical rescue operations.

Training in Italy was great encouragement for them and after that training they decides to introduce rope rescue operations in firefighting in Croatia. International cooperation and training is probably the best way for improving Croatian fire service.

1 day theoretical lecture was held on Brijuni island, probably the most beautiful islands in Croatia and spectacularly scenery for this kind of event.

Practical trainings are being performed on mainland, near city of Pazin on locality Zarecki krov.
This locality is excellent for rope rescue training and it provides  many possible training situations.

«Chemical risk» Leaders course

«Chemical risk» Leaders course in Divulje , Croatia, June 06. – 17. 2005 in Regional Disaster Management Center «Divulje» was organized in cooperation with French embassy in Zagreb.

This course was held by French firefighter instructors: Commander Jean Francois Roure (SDIS 30) for pedagogical responsibilities, and Commander Cristinne Saludas (l`EMZ south) and Captain Gil Dopierala (SDIS 84) as lecturers.

On the course they were representatives of 8 countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania an Croatia (professional fire departments Umag, Rijeka, Varazdina, Sisak, and Zagreb).

During two weeks following subject are been practiced:

• Presentation of Civil Protection in France
• Presentation of French National Instruction Guide “Chemical Risk” and experience application
• Toxicology
• Presentation o f personal protection kit
• Basis of operative management and command
• Saturated steam pressure, LIE, LES, Inflammation Point
• Reflex and planned actions
• Operative Management and Command applied on Chemical risk
• SAS
• Directed actions
• BLEVE and estimation of the material quantity
• Presentation of impressive OZIRIS software who calculates, predict and presents all factors used on chemical risk accident. We can only hope that this software will be translated, with our cooperation, and put in our fire service.

After that practical field exercises are being held in different scenarios: river pollution, see pollution, truck crash with HAZMAT materials involved, chemical plant accident, swimming pool accident, possible BLEVE scenario...

On practical field exercises we rotate our roles to learn every part of tactical or operating work in chemical risk accident.

From tactical point of view, it is not so much different from our tactic, but it is much better organized; entry door SAS is constantly monitored and entire tactical situation is always been drawn on a board which decreases possibility of fatal error.

We have also visited Split fire department and some local HAZMAT exercise in nearby town of Sibenik.

French instructors have been monitoring an evaluating progress of candidates, and on last day we have a test.

Members of Regional Disaster Management Center «Divulje» who organized these course in cooperation with French embassy in Zagreb are to recommended for they effort and good organization skills. We can only hope that similar courses are going to be held in future, and that we will be there.

Thank you all! ;)

LADDER 49 MOVIE PREMIERE

Did you know that a symbol of US firefighter-Dalmatian dog is originally from Croatia, small European state on the Adriatic Sea…

Croatian firefighters honored the Ladder 49 movie

On the opening night ( 05.01. 2005) of the movie Ladder 49, around 350 members of the Zagreb fire department were presenting the work of firefighters to the audience of 1 000 peoplefirefighters and their families, members of fire departments from Croatia and other guests.

The premiere was conducted by Croatian movie star Daria Knez (above).

General public has a little knowledge of firefighters job and this movie premiere is good opportunity to show dangers and difficulties of the job.

In the front of the cinema was parked fire truck for people to see the equipment and to try it for itself.

Inside the theatre was a:

• exhibition of training and real action firefighters pictures

• exhibit of around the world firefighters t-shirt and patches
• display of fire truck models
• video movie presentation-about Zagreb fire department
• display of firefighters personal protective equipment
• Play station 2 and PC firefighters related games
• and other fire related topics

Media coverage was excellent- several TV stations, web sites and newspapers reported “that the premiere was marked with firefighters demonstrating fire fighting equipment and rescue procedure”.
